2008 NHL Playoffs - Round 2: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Rangers Game 4 REVIEW
May 2nd 2008 21:33
Rangers' veterans lead New York to a 3-0 victory against Pittsburgh.
This time the Rangers had their way. They scored the first goal, they scored on the powerplay, and Lundqvist was excellent, effectively shutting out Pittsburgh's big canons.
Indiscipline sunk the Penguins. With seven penalties to kill (there were actually ten penalties but the last three were only for stats since the game was already over), there wasn't much time for Crosby and Co. to some damage. The Rangers controlled the game from start to finish. When they weren't in control, Lundqvist stood tall. The goalie even stepped out of his crease to challenge shots, something he didn't do in previous games.
This game was the perfect illustration of veterans against young guns. Jaromir Jagr (two goals scored, including the game-winner), Marty Straka, and Brendan Shanahan were at the top of their game. Chris Drury gave his all despite a rib injury, and rookie Brandon Dubinski followed his older teammates with a powerplay goal to his name. The Penguins, on the other hand, became more and more frustrated as the game wore on. Malkin was repeatedly denied by Lundqvist, including on a penalty shot (though Malkin was the one who squandered his opportunity). Here's a replay of his shot or whatever he was trying to do; pretty bad, in my opinion. Apart from the Rangers' goals, the third period was mainly a showing of Crosby and Malkin losing grip of their emotions. They both were sent to the box for roughing along with the Rangers' Dan Girardi. Needless to say, this was good for the Rangers. Instead of focusing on scoring goals, the Penguins were mostly trying to avenge cheap shots. It took them right out of their game.
So now, both teams are going back to the Igloo with the Penguins leading the series 3-1. I guess the Rangers weren't going to let the Penguins through with two sweeps.
Out west, the Detroit Red Wings swept the Colorado Avalanche with a major statement. The Wings won Game 4 by the score of 8-2! Yikes!

The Avs were playing without Forsberg, and Ryan Smith for that game and Jose Theodore (the goalie) hasn't been delivering when it matters the most. The same thing happened when he was in Montreal but when he played for the Habs, there was at least a decent back-up (Cristobal Huet). The key to winning against the Wings is to keep control of puck, they're at their best when they have the puck for long stretches of time. I guess the Avs weren't ablre to disrupt their flow.
