2008 NHL Playoffs - Round 2: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Rangers Game 2 REVIEW
April 28th 2008 17:18
Penguins make solid defensive effort as they shut out Rangers 2-0.
Poor Rangers. Not only do they have to deal with the Penguins offensive firepower, those young hot shots are also giving them lessons on how to keep a lead. That's pretty insulting for guys who've seen it all.
The Pens scored their first goal on the powerplay halfway through the second period. Until then, both goaltenders were solid, refusing to give an inch to the opposition's forwards. It was pretty clear from the beginning of the game that the first goalie to break was going to lose the match. After their goal, the Penguins adopted a more defensive tactic, almost similar to what the Rangers had done in Game 1. However, unlike the Blueshirts, Pittsburgh's D didn't hang back in their zone waiting for the Rangers to attack. Indeed, they took a very proactive stance, preventing the Rangers from making plays in the neutral zone. When the Pens' defense cleard the puck, there was always one forward following the puck to pressure the Rangers' D. The Penguins' defensive display was even more impressive when they were killing penalties. Often, the Rangers would spend one minute of their powerplay unable to penetrate the Penguins' zone. They were stuck at the blue line. When they did enter the O-zone, Fleury was there to make the stops. Heck, even Crosby was blocking shots. Finally, all the Rangers' hopes vanished when Adam Hall scored in an empty net.
The Penguins now lead the series 2-0 and they seem pretty unstoppable by the way they're playing. The Rangers better raise their game if they don't want to go golfing next week.
In the Western Conference, the Stars scored four goals in the third period to defeat the Sharks 5-2. The Stars lead the series 2-0.
