Opening Statement

For someone who grew up in the Caribbean, the concept of a hockey game is about as foreign as seeing aliens refuel their spaceship at a local gas station.
Unlike the majority of Canadians who learn to ice skate at three years old, and start playing hockey as early as six, my only experience of hockey as a child was the videogame "Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey 98" on the Nintendo 64 in which I spent most of my time cross checking the opposing team’s players in order to provoke a fight. That was my view of hockey: big men hitting each other and fighting while standing on skates.
It wasn't until after moving to the Mecca of hockey – Montreal - that I discovered the skills and tactics inherent to the game, as well as the madness of demanding fans who are ready to fire half the team and coaching staff after a loss. After living three years in this city, it is impossible to avoid the excitement at this time of the year. After a long, and depressing record-setting winter, spring time is here and so is hockey fever with the playoffs being only two days away.
This blog will follow the 2008 playoffs with special attention to the Montreal Canadiens, the Washington Capitals, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Stay tuned for previews and post-games analysis.
N.B.: After the playoffs, the focus of this blog will shift to the Montreal Canadiens, their offseason signings and the 2008-2009 season which will be the celebration of their centennial.
