Game 76 Review: Canadiens Dominate Blackhawks 4-1 (Highlights Video Included)

April 7th 2009 04:40
Montreal Canadiens, Habs, Alex Kovalev, Saku Koivu, Alex Tanguay

Any fan wondering if the French-Canadian goalie curse also applied to French goaltenders who used to play for the Canadiens probably felt relieved last Tuesday when the Habs easily dispatched Cristobal Huet and the Chicago Blackhawks by the final score of 4-1.

Knowing Huet, there was a strong possibility that he would let in one softie or two, but several questions were still up for debate before the opening whistle. Would Carey Price – who considers Huet as a good friend and sort of a big brother/mentor when the French goalie was in Montreal – also surrender a couple of softies, or would he stand tall like he did against Buffalo? Would Huet outperformed the young goalie that ousted him of Montreal or would he be rusty after being on the bench for the past five games?

All those interrogations were quickly put to rest when Alex Kovalev scored the opening goal, unassisted, in the 25 seconds of play after a giveaway from defenseman Duncan Keith. It was Montreal's first shot of the game and, most importantly, it meant that the Blackhawks would have to play catch-up from the first minute of play - not really the kind of start you'd want as the visiting team.

Guillaume Latendresse added to the Canadiens' lead at the the start of the second period with a bizarre goal as the puck jumped above the net and fell inside the red line. When Andrei Markov made it 3-0 on the powerplay, the game was pretty much over. The Blackhawks did get on the board halfway through the third period but Christopher Higgins' goal – also on the powerplay – dashed any hope of a Chicago comeback.

The Chicago Blackhawks were probably the most dangerous of the Canadiens' opponents last week, but they turned out to be all flash and no substance. They're a young team who are still learning the ropes. As for the Canadiens, they're still chugging along thanks to the phenomenal work of the TKK line.

My 3 Stars:
3. Carey Price
2. Andrei Markov
1. Alex Kovalev
