Game 51 Review: Canadiens Dominate Penguins 4-2 (Highlights Video Included)
February 8th 2009 06:22
It's hard to imagine the Pittsburgh Penguins not making the playoffs one year after advancing to the Stanley Cup final. But it's a possibility that might turn into reality unless the players not named Crosby finally start to care and Marc-Andre Fleury finds his touch.
I've never seen the Penguins be as pathetic as they were on Tuesday against the Canadiens. Sure, they got the first goal of the game – Luca Caputi got his first NHL goal on his first shift – but it was all Montreal from that point on. In the first period, Sergei Kostitsyn stole the puck from Fleury behind the net and passed it to Hamrlik who easily found open net.
Even though the Canadiens were undisciplined, they still found a way to get past the Penguins defense. Halfway through the second period, Christopher Higgins gave the home team the lead on a breakaway goal while the Pens were on the powerplay. Four minutes later, Maxim Lapierre added to the lead after some superb work by Max Pacioretty along the boards. Malkin made it 3-2 on the powerplay halfway through the third period, but Andrei Kostitsyn's goal sealed the deal for the game which ended 4-2. Montreal's last goal was a flashback to last season's surprising team with Tomas Plekanec, Alex Kovalev, and Andrei Kostisyn combining on a tic-tac-toe move that left the defense helpless.
Apart from Crosby, no one seemed really into it on the visiting team. Staal was completely invisible as was the rest of the supporting cast, and the defense was atrocious. Ryan Whitney was -4 for the night, the worst rating of the night. They better find a solution soon because Bettman won't like it if posterboy Crosby doesn't make it to the playoffs.
My 3 Stars:
3. Sidney Crosby
2. Max Pacioretty
1. Roman Hamrlik
