Game 48 Review: Panthers Annihilate Canadiens 5-1 (Highlights Video Included)
February 3rd 2009 05:13
Against a team desperately looking to make the playoffs, the Montreal Canadiens looked like a bunch of ballerinas last Thursday when they met the Florida Panthers.
Indiscipline cost them early in the game as the Panthers got a 2-0 lead with both goals coming on the powerplay. As if the spectators needed proof of who wanted this game more, Saku Koivu's shot into an almost-empty net during the Canadiens' penalty-kill was blocked by a defenseman who came to his netminder's rescue. At the other end, Carey Price was left to fend off for himself. The Panthers' first goal was the result of poor defensive coverage by Higgins who watched the puck instead of keeping an eye on his man. Later in the second period, with a close score of 2-1, defenseman Francis Bouillon simply watched the parade go as Richard Zednik had all the space in the world to beat Price with a nice deke. At 3-1, the Habs simply gave up and a penalty shot awarded to Radek Dvorak halfway through the third period only served to put the game beyond doubt.
It was probably one of the worst Canadiens game of the season. The visitors' play in their defensive zone was simply awful when compared to the Panthers' obsession with protecting their goalkeeper. The win puts the Panthers in eight place while the Canadiens are now only six points in front of the final playoff spot.
