Game 17 Review: Price's 46 Saves Not Enough As Hurricanes Defeat Canadiens 2-1

November 20th 2008 23:53
Same story, different game. The lack of character in the Montreal Canadiens team is becoming a worrisome sight as they picked up only two wins in the last six games. Tuesday, it was against a struggling and injury-filled Carolina Hurricanes that the Canadiens didn't show up.

The Habs started the game relatively well. They were not last year's dominating team, but slightly better than the squad that narrowly defeated the St. Louis Blues on Sunday. They even scored on the powerplay early in the second period – something that hasn't happened in a long while. However, that goal was their only accomplishment of the night as they reverted to fancy passing plays in the third period. It was one of those plays that led to Carolina's equalizer as the two Habs defensemen faced an odd-man rush. Ironically, it was Sergei Samsonov who scored the equalizer - the same player who was kicked out of Montreal because of his perimeter play and reticence to go to the net (his attitude didn't help his case either). So of course the hockey gods would have him score his first goal of the season against his old team. From that point on, the Canes picked up some momentum, scoring three minutes later on a powerplay.

The Canadiens had a bit less than 14 minutes to score another, and even take the lead. If it was last year's team, they probably would have scored three goals in those remaining minutes, but this year, they quit halfway through the period. Oh sure, there were some flashes here and there. Andrei Kostitsyn's laser shot hit the post, and after that there was nothing. Just a bunch of dudes skating around. When Carbonneau asked for a time-out and put six skaters on the ice, the Habs were unable to enter the offensive and didn't seem to want to press the issue. The only player who showed for the Canadiens that night was Carey Price. But he can't be expected to stay perfect every game for the team to have a chance. Right now, the Habs have to give him a comfortable lead to reward him or something.

Tonight, the Canadiens have the perfect opportunity to get back on track as they will face the struggling Senators who are currently last in the East and missing several players. But then again, the coaching staff said the same thing against the Blues and the Hurricanes. It's up to the players to show up with some tenacity and determination.

My 3 Stars:
3.Sergei Samsonov
2.Carey Price
1.Cam Ward
