Game 12 Review: Grabovski Has Career Night As Maple Leafs Defeat Canadiens 6-3
November 11th 2008 22:38
It was the most embarrassing game I've ever been associated with. Those were the words of Montreal Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau. And boy, was he right. There isn't enough adjectives to describe the Habs' pathetic performance on Saturday. Lifeless, lazy, horrible, shameful take your pick. One thing's for sure they truly deserved it.
You know something's wrong when speedy but fragile ex-Hab Mikhail Grabovski picks up one goal and two assists while undressing your best defenseman Andrei Markov, and spending the night crashing into Carey Price.
A powerplay goal by Nicklas Hagman gave Toronto a one-goal lead halfway through the first period. However, the goal was the least of Montreal's concerns. Tom Kostopoulos, the penalized player, was issued a game misconduct after his hit on defenseman Mike Van Ryn, essentially leaving the Habs with 17 skaters instead of the usual 18 for the rest of the game. Afterwards, it was confirmed that the defenseman suffered from a concussion, a broken nose, and a broken finger.
The Canadiens conceded another goal early in the second period when Grabovski was left wide open in the slot. About eight minutes later, the score was 2-2 thanks to powerplay goals by Montreal. Hagman scored his second of the night (also on the powerplay) to give back the lead to the home side, but the Habs quickly replied via Saku Koivu who rifled a precise shot over Toskala's shoulder. Toronto was by far the better team afterwards as they scored three unanswered goals two of those were in the third.
Although, this has been the best start for the Habs in a long time (they are 8-2-2 before tonight's game), you couldn't help but feel shades of the 2006-2007 Canadiens on Saturday. A porous defense, unreliable forwards at even-strength it was just a mess. A terrible terrible mess. Let's hope they pick up the slack from now on.
My 3 Stars:
3.Luke Schenn
2.Nickas Hagman
1.Mikhail Grabovski
Note: Today, Tom Kostopoulos was suspended for three games for his hit on Van Ryn.
