2008 NHL Playoffs - Western Conference Finals: Detroit Red Wings vs. Dallas Stars Game 2 REVIEW

May 12th 2008 02:52
Red Wings edge out Stars with a 2-1 win.

With Franzen out of the lineup because of concussion-like symptoms, the Wings were missing one of their attack's key components. And yet, they kept flying high.

Detroit took the lead six minutes into the game and it suddenly felt like déjà vu. The Stars didn't stick to last game's script however, and scored on their first powerplay. Five minutes later, Henrik Zetterberg scored during the man-advantage, and it was all that she wrote.

Dallas was a lot more intense for this game. They used their speed. Their passes were sharp. However, they need to practise their shooting a little more. They missed countless opportunities by shooting everywhere expect at the net. They couldn't capitalize on a 4-on-1. A 4-on-1! I couldn't believe it. By missing all their shots, the Stars aren't making Osgood work too much. Yes, he has to stay sharp no matter what, but you can't expect to beat a goalie by shooting 18 times on goal.

The rest of the game was uneventful. The second period was a parade of penalties – they were 8 penalties during that time (5 for Detroit, 3 for Dallas). In the third period, desperate Stars were trying to level the score but Detroit's win was never in doubt. Now, the Stars are going back home down 2-0 in the series and with nothing to counter Holstrom's presence in front of Turco's net.

It's a good thing that I was too busy to write this review this afternoon. After the game, Mike Ribeiro slashed Osgood for what seemed like no reason at all. I was going to say that Ribeiro might be suspended and that would have seriously hurt the Stars. However, today I found out that Osgood had poked Ribeiro before the Stars forward hit the Wings' goalie. So, both players were fined along with another Dallas player (Steve Ott) who punched another Wings player. There will be no suspensions. But after this incident, both teams will go to the third game with extra motivation.
