2008 NHL Playoffs - Round 1: Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins Game 6 REVIEW
April 20th 2008 23:57
Habs back to square one as Bruins defeat them 5-4 to level the series.
It started well enough.
With Koivu back in the line-up, the second line finally showed signs of life. Higgins was on fire and scored two goals. Sergei Kostitsyn showed that when he and Koivu play together, they're unstoppable. Bouillon scored a goal on his first game back and seemed fine. Plekanec finally scored his first career playoff goal. Those were the good things.
The problem with the Canadiens in this round is that the team as a whole hasn't bothered to show up. In every game, there were only one pair of defensemen and one line and a half working. Last night, Koivu's line showed up big time. On Plekanec's line, only the young Czech decided to play. A. Kostitsyn seemed scared every time he went to the corners. Kovalev played an atrocious game. He was the cause for one of the Bruins' goal after taking all the time in the world to clear the puck and failing miserably. He probably figured that with Koivu back, he didn't need to make that much effort. Lapierre's line is completely useless. In fact, I don't think that Carbo needs to play this line at all. Streit sucks, Dandenault is, well, Dandenault; and Lapierre is just a chicken running around with its head cut off. The grinders line worked hard, they hit a little less last night but I don't think people should reproach them for slacking off when the majority of the team does the same. After all, they've been the best and most consistent line during this series.
In defense, Harmlik and Brisebois were the most solid defensemen. Markov seems to be injured, Komisarek can't be effective if Markov isn't. Bouillon isn't at 100% yet and it shows and Georges wasn't a factor. Between the pipes, Price had a normal game. He had no chance on Boston's goals and the team supposed to help him didn't offer proper support.
I hate to say it, but I don't think that Montreal is advancing. The offense is not working. Now, the defense has gone AWOL, and their confidence is shaken up. They're not so sure they can beat Boston anymore. For Claude Julien's squad, life is great. They now believe that they can beat the Habs, they just have to put their worker boots on. Momentum is all on Boston's side right now.
In other games, the Red Wings won their sixth match against the Preds, shutting them out 3-0. The Wings are now through to the second round. The Avs did the same, defeating the Minnesota Wild 2-1 in the sixth game. Colorado is now through to the second round.

Brisebois came back this season with a $900,000 contract. He goes back to free agency this summer but he said that he wanted to say. After the playoffs, I'll make a post on free agents.
