2008 NHL Playoffs - Round 1: Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins Game 5 REVIEW
April 19th 2008 01:51
Carey Price becomes mortal and the Bruins run over the Habs, 5-1.
Pathetic. That's how the Canadiens were during Game 5. PA-THE-TIC.
Oh, they started well enough. Kovalev scored the first goal of the game without his helmet on, it brought back memories of the famous blond demon, Guy Lafleur. After that, nothing.
The Canadiens were content to stay with their 1 goal lead. During the second period, there was no effort to stop the Bruins who did whatever they wanted. So, the Bs grabbed the equalizer. After that, the Habs turned into a complete disaster. Carey Price, who was perfect in this series, had a brain fart – his first in all the season. He had the puck but instead of forcing a faceoff, he dropped the puck at the side of his net and Glen Metropolit scored the goal. After that, Sergei Kostitsyn, who seems to be taking dumb penalty after dumb penalty, went to the box for an O-zone hook. The Bruins scored and that was it. At 3-1, Price wasn't into it anymore and by the time the Bruins scored their fifth, I had the feeling that Carey was expecting to be pulled out of the game in favor of Halak.
Michael Ryder who came back after being an healthy scratch did absolutely nothing. This guy is doing everything wrong. Instead of passing, he shoots; instead of shooting, he passes. Instead of giving the puck to his linemates who are more skilled in puck control, he decides to take on the opposite team by himself. Someone should tell him that only Kovalev has this privilege.
The Bruins played this game like it was their last. The Habs played like it was a pre-season match. No heart, no passion, no intensity. Even Markov, who's pretty reserved, showed signs of frustration on the PP when his teammates made no effort to get themselves unmarked. The thing is, I'm not really disappointed that Boston won. I mean, the Bruins are working hard here, they should get something in return. What pisses me off is that everyone knows that the Habs can play better. Everyone is waiting for them to be better. But right now, they're just coasting. If, and I do mean 'if,' they manage to get to the second round, they'll be shredded to pieces.
The good news is that Koivu is back on his skates. Hurry back, Captain K, the team needs you to pull off some magic. One wizard (Kovy) doesn't seem to be enough.
In other games, the Flyers won in second OT against the Caps, 4-3. Philly leads the series 3-1. Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to watch this game since the Habs were playing at the same time. Maybe I should've watched it. From the highlights it looked like a very intense affair, nothing like the Habs' catastrophe. The Sharks beat the Flames 4-2. The Sharks now lead the series 3-2. The Avs beat the Wild 3-2. The Colorado Avalanche lead the series 3-2.
