"To you from flailing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high."
So, the Red Wings will try to extend their lead to 3-0 tonight at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The Stars will try to avoid both falling into an hole and losing face in front of their home crowd. It should be a great game. It doesn't look too good for the Stars though. In both previous round, the visiting team managed to split the games taking place at Dallas.

It will be a great game if the Stars manage to shoot on net instead of around it. Osgood needs some work. So does the Wings' D. The Stars need to copy Detroit's tactic and park someone in front of Osgood in order to obsure his view. They also have to keep their emotions in check. The Detroit players are smart enough to not retaliate when a situation is at their advantage, so Dallas shouldn't bother with punches to the face and other cheap shots. Instead, they should try to legally crush Detroit's speedy players into the boards.

Detroit shouldn't get too complacent. They won the last game simply because Dallas couldn't shoot properly, so they can't underestimate the Stars. In previous rounds, they won the second game by a large margin (4-2, 5-1) whereas in this series, the second game finished 2-1. It goes to show that the Stars a lot closer to victory than people give them credit for. The Wings have to avoid the penalty box. The Stars powerplay finally woke up in last game, and when their PP is on, watch out.

Penguins defeat Flyers 4-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Don't let the score fool you, the Flyers played a much better game this time around. They were down 1-0 at the end of the first period but Crosby's powerplay goal was nothing more than a lucky bounce – the puck deflected off a Flyers defenseman's skate and beat Biron on the glove side. Philly equalized the mark 5 minutes into the second period through Jeff Carter, also on the powerplay. But then the Penguins took the lead once again on the powerplay after Marian Hossa cashed in on a Biron rebound. When the Penguins had another man advantage at the end of the second period, it was the perfect opportunity for them to take a 2-goal lead. However, the Flyers weren't about to quit and Mike Richards scored the equalizer on a breakaway while his team was shorthanded. By the beginning of the third period, it was obvious that the game could swing either way. Halfway through the third, Maxime Talbot celebrated his return from injury by scoring the Pens' third goal after a beautiful pass from Ryan Malone. The fourth goal was an empty-netter which reassured the Penguins and crushed the Flyers' hope.

The Flyers could have won that game. Two things prevented them from achieving that goal: indiscipline and Brière's invisible act. The Flyers took ten penalties during the game. It's hard to build some offense when you're always defending. They were even luckier during a penalty in which the best defenseman was a broken stick lying on the ice. The stick was right between the blue line and the slot and moved around a bit. It prevented the Penguins from making those cross-ice passes they love so much, and their defensemen couldn't take low ice-level shots from the point. In Brière's case, before these series, he had 3 game-winning goals and led the team in powerplay goals with 5. He's been pretty invisible in the Finals so far, scoreless in both games. If he's off, his linemates are off, and the Flyers are left hanging without their number one line. He has to play better in the next two games if the Flyers are to have a chance.

The Penguins shouldn't be too happy with themselves. Yes, they won the game and had a disallowed goal (more on that later), but they let the Flyers come back from behind twice in the game instead of trying to build a more comfortable lead. At 3-2, you could tell that they were getting nervous and praying for the Flyers' failure. Malkin wasn't as dominant as the first game and even though Crosby was their best player on the ice, his goal was a still a piece of luck.

About the disallowed goal, I don't quite remember when it happened but had it counted, the score would've been 2-0 Penguins instead of 1-1. Anyways, the puck hit the post, rolled inside the red line and was grabbed by Biron. Now, for it to be a goal, the puck has to cross the red line entirely. In this case, Biron' glove covered the puck right when it completely crossed the line. After a long review, they disallowed the goals because the video evidence wasn't conclusive enough. But I think it was a goal. The video didn't offer enough proof but what about common sense? The puck was rolling, it crossed the line and was covered by Biron's. It's physics, that's all. But I guess they wanted to see it on TV to be sure it was real. The Penguins won so it didn't really matter. But if they had lost, you would be hearing all about it today. It's a shame, really.

Red Wings edge out Stars with a 2-1 win.

With Franzen out of the lineup because of concussion-like symptoms, the Wings were missing one of their attack's key components. And yet, they kept flying high.

Detroit took the lead six minutes into the game and it suddenly felt like déjà vu. The Stars didn't stick to last game's script however, and scored on their first powerplay. Five minutes later, Henrik Zetterberg scored during the man-advantage, and it was all that she wrote.

Dallas was a lot more intense for this game. They used their speed. Their passes were sharp. However, they need to practise their shooting a little more. They missed countless opportunities by shooting everywhere expect at the net. They couldn't capitalize on a 4-on-1. A 4-on-1! I couldn't believe it. By missing all their shots, the Stars aren't making Osgood work too much. Yes, he has to stay sharp no matter what, but you can't expect to beat a goalie by shooting 18 times on goal.

The rest of the game was uneventful. The second period was a parade of penalties – they were 8 penalties during that time (5 for Detroit, 3 for Dallas). In the third period, desperate Stars were trying to level the score but Detroit's win was never in doubt. Now, the Stars are going back home down 2-0 in the series and with nothing to counter Holstrom's presence in front of Turco's net.

It's a good thing that I was too busy to write this review this afternoon. After the game, Mike Ribeiro slashed Osgood for what seemed like no reason at all. I was going to say that Ribeiro might be suspended and that would have seriously hurt the Stars. However, today I found out that Osgood had poked Ribeiro before the Stars forward hit the Wings' goalie. So, both players were fined along with another Dallas player (Steve Ott) who punched another Wings player. There will be no suspensions. But after this incident, both teams will go to the third game with extra motivation.

Hey y'all, sorry for posting this so late. Soccer season has started and I just came back from practice. Anyways, this is going to be short.

The Flyers obviously can't stop the one-two punch of Crosby and Malkin without Timmonen in the lineup. what they need to do is spend as much time as possible in the Pens' D-zone and get Fleury out of position as much as possible. Danny Briere's line needs to produce offensively. Umberger/Richards can't bail them out every time

Let's hope that the Stars have taken a well-deserved rest before tonight's game. They are down 1-0 in this series and the Red Wings look pretty unstoppable.

First order of business tonight will be to take away the Wings' possession. In order to do that, the Stars will have to win more faceoffs. You can't expect to win a game when you're constantly running after the puck. Secondly, avoid turnovers. They constantly gave away the puck in the first game while being in their own zone. That's a big no-no when playing against a speedy team like Detroit but we'll chalk this one up to fatigue. Furthermore, Dallas has to stay disciplined. Detroit isn't a team that lets itself get distracted/intimidated by cheap shots and/or extremely physical play so the Stars will have to avoid the penalty box. They also have to find a way to get Franzen and Holmstrom out of Marty Turco's face. Otherwise, life will be miserable for the Stars' goaltender

Let's make one thing clear: these two teams hate each other. The Penguins hate the Flyers' brainless thuggery along with their pitiless hits along the boards. The Flyers hate the Penguins' infuriating diving and the confidence in the young hotshots' eyes. Both teams were at the receiving end of a severe beating by the other team during the regular season – The Pens lost 8-2 to the Flyers in December while the Flyboys lost 7-1 to the Penguins in March. Both teams are from the same state (Pennsylvania) and division (Atlantic) and had to face each other eight times during the season, splitting the match-ups evenly with four wins each. The Penguins were also rumored to purposely lose the last game of the season against Philly in order to face Ottawa in the playoffs' first round (and thus, avoiding a confrontation with Philadelphia). All those reasons make this playoffs series 'The War of Pennsylvania.'

But let's compare the teams separately, shall we

It's been only four days since Round 2 has ended and yet it feels like two weeks have gone by. Tonight, the Western Conference Finals will start, opposing two teams with very different paths.

The Detroit Red Wings were the first team in the league to qualify for the playoffs, finishing the season with 115 points. They won their conference (second-place San Jose Sharks had 108 points) and their division, leaving the competition in the dust. The first-round wasn't easy as the Nashville Predators gave them a fair amount of trouble, forcing coach Mike Babcock to go with the back-up goaltender Chris Osgood for the two final games instead of regular starter Dominik Hasek. Detroit won the series 4-2. The second round was a whole lot easier as the Wings swept the Colorado Avalanche 4-0. The Wings scored at least four goals in all four games including an 8-2 drubbing of the Avs at Colorado's Pepsi Center. Chris Osgood has become the Wings' starting goalie with a goals-against average (GAA) of 1.52 and save percentage of .937. Those numbers put him at the top of this year's playoffs' goaltenders in the GAA category

Penguins finish off Rangers with a 3-2 OT win.

The Rangers did the best they could but they couldn't stop the offensive machine that is the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens drew first blood on the powerplay: Marian Hossa completed a beautiful play by Ryan Malone who put Lundqvist out of position. Five minutes later, Evgeni Malkin put the score at 2-0 with a beautiful backhand. Malkin was a real beast during the game, always on the verge of scoring. The Rangers had their hands full with him and Lundqvist had to make numerous miracle saves to keep the Russian from scoring more than once. At the end of the second period, the Rangers trailed 2-0. Knowing that the Pens can play low-scoring games almost as well as firewagon hockey, I was convinced that the Blueshirts were finished. Boy, was I wrong

Flyers eliminate Canadiens with a 6-4 win.

When snakebit Christopher Higgins put the score at 3-1 at the beginning of the second period, the whole Bell Centre started believing. Carbo had his tie. The Habs had scored the first goal on the powerplay, killing two birds with one stone. They also succesfully killed a 5-on-3 right after Higgins' goal. What happened, you might ask. It's simple, really. While the Habs' offense finally woke up, their defense offered one of their worst performance since the beginning of the season

Early game, early preview.

The New York Rangers still have their backs to the wall but they now know what it takes to beat the Penguins - get into Crosby and Malkin's heads to take them off their game. Once again, the veterans will have to show the way. Expect another big game for Jagr, Straka, and Shanaan. They have a hard task in front of them, as the Penguins are 12-0 at home

Carbo's lucky tie
Can THE TIE go 4-0?
This is the moment of truth for the Canadiens. A loss tonight will eliminate them from the 2008 playoffs. The lousy weather outside reflects very well the fans' state of mind. Some have given up for this year, others stay optimistic, and most are hoping that Lady Luck will show up on their side for once in this series.

The Canadiens have trailed 1-3 thirteen times in their history. They came back to win it only once. The good news is that several members of the current roster were there for the comeback. Furthermore, the Canadiens have never lost four games in a row in the 2007-2008 reason (their losing streak stops at three). No one is blaming the Habs for playing badly. They outshot and outhit their opponents in all four games, they just can't seem to solve Biron. The situation is dire as reflected in this article (it's in French but the cartoon on top says it all). Guy Carbonneau has confirmed that he will be wearing his tie.
Youppi
Youppi the mascot
During the Montreal-Boston series, there was a sculpture (pictured) in the downtown area which wore the jersey of Carey Price. After Game 1 of this series, the jersey was apparently stolen and the Canadiens hadn't won a game since. For the sake of superstition, the statue will once again wear the jersey (though I have no idea if it's the same jersey or a new one). Lanterns and candles will also be lit for the team. People have even been blaming the team's mascot, Youppi (pictured), for the troubles of the team. In their minds, Youppi should be dyed in another color, thus erasing his orange fur (orange is the Flyers' color

Rangers' veterans lead New York to a 3-0 victory against Pittsburgh.

This time the Rangers had their way. They scored the first goal, they scored on the powerplay, and Lundqvist was excellent, effectively shutting out Pittsburgh's big canons
