Stanley Cup
Who will win the Stanley Cup?
It's finally here. The 2008 NHL Stanley Cup Finals start tonight and will oppose the two best teams in the league – the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Both teams play a fast type of hockey, heavily relying on puck possession and effective transitions from defense to attack. Although the forwards are the best weapons of both teams, their defensemen aren't too shabby either as they can get the job done in low-scoring games.

This final will also be a confrontation between experienced players (Detroit) and the new generation (Pittsburgh). Several players in the Wings camp boast Stanley Cup rings while the Pens' young stars have trouble growing a decent beard. The Zetterberg-Datsyuk duo have the same number of points as the Crosby-Malkin duo (though the Pens played less games than the Wings). However, the Pens can also count on Marian Hossa who's had 19 points so far, the same number as Malkin and Datsyuk. The Wings also have the playoffs' best goalscorer in Johan Franzen, however, the Swedish “Mule” will not play in Game 1 since he still presents concussion-like symptoms.

Both teams are pretty balanced in defense too. Though, the Red Wings have a slight advantage in that category since their defensemen can also help out offensively. With attacking defensemen such as Brian Rafalski, Nicklas Lidstrom, Nicklas Kronwall and long-time veteran Chris Chelios in Detroit's ranks, the Pens will have to avoid the penalty box in order to minimize powerplay opportunities for the Wings.

Where the Pens lack in offensive defensemen, they make up for it with secondary scoring from their third and fourth line. Maxime Talbot and Jordan Staal have come up big when Crosby and Malkin couldn't get going in previous rounds. The Wings have to hope that their third and fourt line will be able to do the same if the Penguins deny Datsyuk and Zetterberg.

Red Wings finally kill Stars with a convincing 4-1 victory.

It took them longer than expected, but the Detroit Red Wings finally managed to eliminate the Dallas Stars. Once again, the team which scored the first goal won the match. Detroit's opportunistic forwards made life easier for Chris Osgood and his defense by building a 4-0 lead.

In the game's preview, I said that Detroit knew only one way to play the game. Well, last night they proved me wrong by simplifying – to the point of dumbing down – their play. Instead of looking to setup people in front of the net like they usually do, the Wings simply threw the puck in Turco's direction, hoping for any deflection to put it in the net. Detroit's first and third goal were scored in that manner – Draper scored the first goal with his mouth, and Drake scored the third after Turco fumbled with the puck. The Datsyuk-Zetterberg duo also stuck in special teams situations – Datsyuk scoring on the powerplay while Zetterberg put in a shorthanded goal. The Wings led 3-0 at the end of the first period. There was, thus, plenty of time for the Stars to come back but Zetterberg's shorthanded goal really broke their tempo as they couldn't recover from that one.

The Stars managed to save face in the third period on the powerplay via Robidas. The goal temporarily gave them life but Osgood stood tall in front of Detroit's net. Left practically by himself towards the end of the third period, Osgood came big, stopping several shots, including making two stops in a row and clearing the rebound. The Wings goalie was on fire in the dying minutes of the game as the Stars couldn't put anything past him. The Stars' inability to score clearly showed a weakness in offense. Stop Modano, Ribeiro, and Morrow, and you've pretty much blanked their entire attack. Their GM should work on adding more skilled players to the lineup (Ryder/Hossa, anyone?).

So, it will be a Red Wings – Penguins Stanley Cup Finale. And TV commentators/analysts everywhere are drooling in anticipation. The confrontations starts on Saturday though, so expect to see more posts on UFAs/RFAs during the week.

The Wings are in trouble.

After scoring 11 goals in the first three games of the series, the Wings have beaten Turco only twice in the last two games. The Stars are denying the Wings the space and open ice necessary to develop plays. Zetterberg and Datsyuk have almost no time to think when they control the puck and Detroit's defense is unable to make the cross-ice passes that are an integral part of their transition play.

Meanwhile, Dallas is benefiting from the solid play of Marty Turco. Not only does the goalie make the big saves at the right time, he also helps out offensively by launching his team's attack. In fact, he could seen as a third defenseman since he wanders so often out of his crease. The Stars shouldn't think that tonight's game will be easy though. The only way to beat the Wings is hard work - as proven in the last two games – and capitalizing on Detroit's mistakes (like the line changes in last game).

Detroit should stay focused. They were getting frustrated in Game 4 by not being able to score, which resulted in players taking dumb penalties. Their strength of character is one of their best qualities, so they should stay level-headed in tonight's game and not retaliate to any taunting.

Penguins humiliate Flyers with a 6-0 victory.

Man, if this isn't hockey's equivalent of a knock-out punch, I don't know what is. The Flyers were outplayed, outhustled, and completely manhandled by a Penguins team determined to teach them a lesson. I don't know which part of the score is worse – the six goals allowed by Martin Biron or the fact that the Flyers couldn't put one past Fleury despite their repeated attempts

Marty Turco shines as Stars defeat Red Wings 2-1.

Turco had never won a game in the Joe Louis Arena before yesterday's game. In the fifth game of a series in which his team trailed 3-1, the Stars goaltender came out big, stopping the Wings' vaunted offense (with his defense's help, of course), and participating in Dallas' transition game which led to two goals

NBC's decision to force the NHL to schedule weekend hockey games in the afternoon has completely screwed up my writing routine, so, once again, here's a preview for this afternoon's game opposing the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers managed to win Game 4 of the series, holding on for dear life when the Penguins reduced the score to 3-2 in the third period. John Stevens mixed up lines for Game 4 and was rewarded by a good offensive performance by his squad. He hopes that they will come out with the same kind of effort this afternoon in order to stay alive for one more game. Timonen and Coburn might be back for today's game. Their presence will bring more stability in the Flyers' defense

Flyers stay alive with a 4-2 win over Pittsburgh.

Like the Stars two nights ago, the Flyers have forced a fifth game in the Eastern Finals by winning Game 4. One question must be asked, though. Why did both Dallas and Philly wait until they were down 3-0 to finally wake up and play hockey

Stars come alive as they defeat flat Red Wings 3-1.

I'm not going to say that the Stars stole that one. They deserved the win. They intense, strong on the puck, and fast, really fast. However, the poor performance of the referees surely didn't hurt. But let's start at the beginning

If the Flyers want to stay alive, they'll have to win tonight's game against an impressive Penguins team. Philadelphia still hasn't found a way to blank the Pens' top scorer but I think it's time for the Flyers to get more physical than they've been in this series. They have no choice but to hit the Penguins since nothing else is working. There's been a lot less hitting in both Conference Finals than in the first round and, as Dallas discovered, to beat the talented teams, you have to be more intense. More intense means to hit your opponent, to deny them space to think, to push their goalie around, to get into their heads. So far, the Flyers aren't getting in the Penguins' head. They did it against Montreal, why can't they repeat their feat?

If the Flyers don't come out hitting tonight, the Penguins only have to look out for one thing – complacency. If they get too confident that they're going to sweep this round, it will come back to bite them. As the Western Conference Finals' Game 4 showed, all it takes is one mistake – whether it's from the referees or the defense – to turn the game around.

Penguins take a 3-0 lead in the series after defeating the Flyers 4-1.

Game 1 was Malkin's show. Game 2 was dominated by Crosby. Guess who showed up for Game 3? Marian Hossa. The Slovak winger scored two goals last night including the game-winner and was everywhere on the ice, also helping out on the defensive front

It's all about saving face tonight for the Stars. Even if they manage to win tonight's game, there is no doubt in anyone's mind that the Red Wings are going to the Stanley Cup Finals. Win or lose, the Stars should be proud of what they've achieved this year, eliminating both the Stanley Cup defending champions, and one of the main contenders for this year's cup. The goal tonight will be to fight to win each period and let the results speak for themselves.

Right now, the Wings are “in the zone.” Every play is precise, every move has a purpose, and every win takes them closer to the Cup. They finished the two previous rounds with commanding performances, shutting out Nashville 3-0 in Game 6 of the first round, and destroying Colorado 8-2 in Game 4 of the second round. The question is, will tonight be an offensive massacre or a strong defensive performance? We'll see how it goes.

Red Wings crush Stars with a 5-2 victory.

Just when I was thinking that the Wings were getting a bit too self-satisfied with a 2-1 win, they go on and offer a commanding performance in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals. The European players came through as Pavel Datsyuk completed a hat trick and Henrik Zetterberg had one goal and two assists

This will be short and simple.

By coming back from behind twice in Game 2, the Flyers showed that they can compete with the Penguins when they put some effort into it. In Game 2, the forced the Penguins to use the dump-and-chase strategy by closing the gaps in the neutral zone, effectively preventing the Pens from combining their passes and speed. Now, the only missing ingredient in Philly's play is their number one line. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Danny Bričre needs to be the dominating force that he was in previous rounds. Otherwise, comparing the Pens to the Flyers would be like comparing Ferraris to Ford's pick-up trucks. Ford's trucks are big and solid but they sure as hell won't win a race against Ferraris. Bričre is Philly's Ferrari so he has to give everything he's got
