2008 NHL Playoffs - Round 1 Updates & Round 2 Matchups
April 23rd 2008 21:47
Eastern Conference:
Montreal Canadiens – Boston Bruins: 4 - 3
The Habs learned a lesson in this series: never take your opponent for granted. The Bruins gave them a tough time and even appeared as the better team from Game 2 to 6. The Habs finally won it in Game 7 but they'll face a more talented attack in the secound round. They better be ready.
Pittsburgh Penguins – Ottawa Senators: 4 - 0
The Pens had the easiest series. It was a walk in the park for them. We'll see how they behave in the second round.
Washington Capitals – Philadelphia Flyers: 3 - 4
The Caps gave it all they got, but in the end, indiscipline cost them this series against the second-best powerplay in the league.
New York Rangers – New Jersey Devils: 4 - 1
The Devils' inability to score goals was painfully obvious as they faced a well-balanced Rangers team. The Rangers have a solid goaltender, solid defensmen, and experienced forwards. Love him or hate him, Sean Avery was very effective in this series. We'll see if he'll continue his antics in the second round.
Round 2 Matchups:
Canadiens – Flyers
Penguins – Rangers
Western Conference:
Detroit Red Wings – Nashville Predators: 4 - 2
The underrated Preds gave a tough time to the Wings. But Detroit didn't collect 115 points in the season without their powerful offense. The Swede brigade came up big when it mattered and the Wings are through.
San Jose Sharks – Calgary Flames: 4 - 3
For a moment there, it looked like Cup contender, the San Jose Sharks, were about to be upset by the Flames. Fortunately, or unfortunately (depends on how you look at it), it didn't happen. After Calgary's elimination, there's only one Canadian team left, the Habs.
Minnesota Wild – Colorado Avalanche: 2 - 4
Not much of a surprise there, except for the play of Saku Koivu's brother Mikko. This guy is a fighter, just like his brother. It's too bad he ended on the losing side.
Anaheim Ducks – Dallas Stars: 2 - 4
THE suprise of the year. Everyone was ready to see the Ducks tear out the Western Conference and go to the finals for the second straight year. Somebody forgot to mention those plans to Marty Turco, the Stars' goaltender, who had an excellent series.
