2008 NHL Playoffs - Round 1: Washington Capitals vs. Philadelphia Flyers Game 2 REVIEW
April 14th 2008 21:47
Martin Biron earns a shutout as the Flyers play the perfect road game to win 2-0.
Team concept. There's a new one for ya.
After I spent the past few days writing about discipline, goaltending and hard work in my previews/reviews, the Washington Capitals took me out of monotony and are now forcing me to write about the basics of hockey.
So, team concept. The Capitals have no idea what it is. Watching them yesterday afternoon, I could swear that some players thought they were alone on the ice. Exhibit A: Mike Green. After scoring two goals in Game 1, the defenseman suddenly thought that he was Wayne Gretzky and decided to take on the Flyers one by one. You all can guess what happened next. He committed giveaway after giveaway and quickly became frustrated by the Flyers' defense. And what happens when you get frustrated? You take a dumb penalty. Exhibit B and C: Semin and Kozlov. Both forwards thought they could change the game by themselves but Martin Biron was there to stone them. The Caps' players have to get one thing straight, Ovechkin is the star here. He's the one who can change the game on a whim. Unfortunately, Ovie was closely watched by the Flyers who never left him unmarked.
The Philadelphia Flyers played the perfect road game. They were organized, focused, intense and hard-working. Martin Biron was perfect, as evidenced by his shutout. He made numerous miracle saves from close range. The forwards were patient, creating opportunities out of the opposing defensemen's mistakes. Both goals were scored by odd-man rushes. The first goal scored by R.J. Umberger came after a Caps' defense line change, and second, scored by Jeff Carter was the result of a turnover in the neutral zone. Guess who was responsible for that turnover? None other than Mike Green.
The series now moves to Philly. The Flyers will be more comfortable at home. Bruce Boudreau better have a talk with his team on how to play as a team.
Other games:

In the battle between Jersey and NY, the Devils finally score more than three goals to beat the Rangers in OT (score: 4-3). The series is now 2-1 Rangers.
In the Western Conference, the Flames come back from a 3-0 to miraculously beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3. Calgary leads the series 2-1.
