2008 NHL Playoffs - Round 1: Washington Capitals vs. Philadelphia Flyers Game 1 Preview
April 11th 2008 19:41
Man, how I wish Alexander Ovechkin would sign in Montreal, we could've had an All-Star Russian team. Alas, it seems not to be as Alexander the Great will stay in Washington for many years to come.
Let's talk about this Washington Capitals team, shall we? They are this year's Cinderella team. At the season's midway point, the Caps were vegetating in the Eastern's Conference basement; hoping that their fellow Southeast division squads would falter against other divisions' teams, consequently falling down the standings and keeping the Southeast title in the Capitals' reach.
At the trade deadline, the Capitals acquired Sergei Federov from the Colombus Blue Jackets and Montreal fan-favorite goaltender Cristobal Huet. The two acquisitions got the train starting as the Caps ran over their competition, winning 11 of their last 12 games, and securing the Southeast division title which guaranteed them a spot in the playoffs. With Ovechkin, Federov, Semin, Kozlov and rookie sensation Nicklas Backstrom on the attack (veterans Olaf Kolzig and Huet will share goaltender duties), the Caps are going to the ball.
Their opponents will be the Philadelphia Flyers, a physical, schizoprenic team. The Flyers have their good games and bad games, I don't know what to expect from them save for a lot of hitting. Daniel “Philadelphia-is-a-better-tea m-than-Montreal” Brière is back from a knee injury and is expected to play in the first game. The Flyers will have to be discplined against a fast and talented Washington team. You don't want to give any man-advantage to Ovechkin and his friends.
