2008 NHL Playoffs - Round 1: Pittsburg Penguins vs. Ottawa Senators Game 2 REVIEW
April 12th 2008 17:38
Sens finally score but it's not enough in a 5-3 defeat to the Pens.
In my preview of the second game between the Penguins and the Senators, I talked about the Penguins indiscipline and the Senators' need for goalscoring. Someone must've read what I wrote.
The Pens took only four penalties throughout the game, conceding one goal to the Sens' powerplay. It was their opponents who fell to indiscipline as Ottawa took nine penalties. The Penguins scored three times with the man advantage, including the game-winning goal.
On the bright side of things, the Sens have, at last, something to build on. Gerber was peppered with 53 shots (the bulk of it coming from the Pens' powerplay) and only gave four goals. The fifth goal was an empty-netter. Down three-nothing, the Sens' attack put itself to work and came back from the deficit to level the score at 3-3. At that point, you could tell that there was hope on the Ottawa bench but it all came crashing down as Martin Lapointe took a high-sticking penalty with a little over one minute and a half remaining. The Pens' Ryan Malone scored on the powerplay and added the empty-netter to end the game with a 5-3 score.
Now, the Sens find themselves down 2-0 in this series. The next two games will be played at Scotiabank Place where the Pens where eliminated last year by a more confident Ottawa team. The Senators will need their 7th man to win a game
Other games:
The New Jersey – New York series is looking more and more like a battle between goaltenders as both Martin Brodeur and Henrik Lundqvist pull out miracle saves after miracle saves. Last night, Lundqvist was the victor as the Rangers beat the Devils 2-1. The Rangers lead the series 2-0.

In the Western Conference, the Minnesota Wild tied their series to 1-1 after a 3-2 OT win on the Colorado Avalanche.
