2008 NHL Playoffs - Round 1: Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins Game 3 REVIEW

April 14th 2008 22:51
Bruins finally pull off a win against the Habs in a 2-1 OT win.

I knew it.

Somewhere in the deep dark recesses of my mind, I knew it. As the media says on this sunny spring day, the Bruins were due. They came out stomping and hitting, overwhelming the Canadiens' defense. The Bs scored the first goal of the game for the first time against the Habs this season. After that, the Canadiens had to play catch up against a team that refused to give an inch.

But this is the Habs we're talking about here. You didn't expect Tim Thomas to shut out the East's most offensive team. Once again, grinders Smolinski, Bégin, and TK got their noses dirty and scored the equalizing goal. They were the best line of the night I think that Kovalev, Koivu and the coaches should talk to Plekanec and Andrei K. The elder Kostitsyn was off to a good start in Game 1 but he's been almost a non-factor in the last two games. He's been hitting players instead of shooting at the net. Go back to your regular day job, Andrei. Plekanec played better in Game 3 than he did in Game 2 but it still wasn't enough. The powerplay isn't working. Apparently, Doug Jarvis didn't have enough time to analyse the game's tapes between Saturday and Sunday. They will bring adjustements for the next game or so Carbo said. You know that this team is not working at its full potential when you're hoping that Smolinski's line will be on for the next shift.

In defense, Georges and Streit – they're not working. Patrice Brisebois didn't have a bad game – thank God for that. Hamrlik was solid as usual. Markov and Komisarek were a little bit better than last game, just not quite there yet. My solution is to *gasp* keep Brisebois in the lineup, move Streit up to forward since he can't deal with the Bruins forecheck, and insert O'Byrne so that we have size on all three pairings. I would've liked to sit either Latendresse and Ryder with Streit replacing Ryder on Higgins' line and Stewart taking Latendresse's place. However, Ryder is stronger on the puck than Streit and has been playing well. He just can't score. Higgins' line is a problem since they have one pure playmaker (Sergei Kostitsyn) stuck with two guys who couldn't score if their life depended on it. Stewart is faster than Latendresse and has size but I think Carbo will keep Latendresse to have someone in front of Thomas during powerplays. Carey Price is excellent and only has to keep doing what he's doing.

The Bruins now have momentum. Most people are going to say that they only won by a goal in a delayed penalty but what people don't understand is the importance of that winning goal. That goal is like Lex Luthor discovering Kryptonite and wearing it around his neck so that he can torture Superman. Claude Julien would say that that win is the light at the end of the tunnel. Well, you know what? I hope that the light is the CH Express coming full speed to crush the Bruins' hope. Let's not forget that the Habs have always played well after a loss. Let that loss be a lesson to them for not providing a 60-minute effort.

On a slightly unrelated note, they showed Saku Koivu watching the game last night. Damn, that guy looks hot in a suit, he was plain yummy. But I want you back on the ice Saku, the team misses you.

Other games:
Read about Game 2 of the Caps vs. Flyers here.

In the battle between Jersey and NY, the Devils finally score more than three goals to beat the Rangers in OT (score: 4-3). The series is now 2-1 Rangers.

In the Western Conference, the Flames come back from a 3-0 to miraculously beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3. Calgary leads the series 2-1.
